Entry
Start (canvas label Start, type module.main) is the required entry of every workflow. It is not in the palette. A new graph already has it. You cannot delete it.
Open Start configuration on the block. That dialog is the same Arguments and Return schemas as on the workflow detail page, plus optional Variables to set in this workflow’s local scope when the run starts.
Downstream blocks read inputs as args.<property>. Start also puts that same input object on the data pipe for the first step. Names from Variables are available as bare keys (total, not args.total).
Linked (system-managed) workflows show Input schema and Output schema as read-only.
Configure
Open the cog on the Start block (dialog header Start configuration).
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | Required. Identity of this graph |
| Description | Optional. What the workflow does |
| Input schema | Shape of caller inputs. Each property becomes args.<key> |
| Output schema | Shape Return must send on the main path. Leave empty for flows that do not return data to a caller |
| Variables | Optional named values set in this workflow’s local scope at start. Same as Set, including naming rules. Later Update can change them from a nested body |
Apply stays disabled until Name is filled.
Property names in the schemas are the keys later blocks and table writes use. They are case-sensitive (orderId, not OrderId).
Handles
| Handle | Role |
|---|---|
| Out (source) | First step of the main path |
There is no In. Nothing connects into Start.
Pipe schema
The next block reads this on the data pipe (pipe.value). The value is the input object. Keys are exactly the property names in Input schema.
If Input schema is empty, the first block still runs; args has no properties.
Use case
- Declare parameters so agents, functions, and event handlers can pass a typed object.
- Set Output schema, then end every completing main-path branch with Return.
- Add Variables such as
total=0before a loop, then Update inside the loop. - Skip both schemas for a chat-only flow that only talks to the person in the session.
